Part 1

Meet the Spanish alphabet

Spanish uses the same Roman alphabet as English, but it has 27 official letters. The extra letter is ñ, which comes directly after n. Most letter shapes will therefore look familiar from the beginning.

Part 2

Learn letter names in groups

Letter names are especially useful when you spell your name, an address, or a new word. Practice them in short groups so the sequence is easier to remember. Say each group slowly first, then repeat it at a natural pace.

Part 3

Notice the unfamiliar names

Several Spanish letter names differ from their English names. The letter h is hache, v is uve, y is ye, and w is often doble u. Learning these names now will make spoken spelling much easier to follow.

Part 4

Put the alphabet to work

When you do not know how a word is written, ask ¿Cómo se escribe? The question means “How is it spelled?” Listen one letter at a time, repeat the spelling back, and ask the speaker to slow down when necessary.
